Because they had recorded it in for Supraphon three years prior to this live performance, this issue begs comparison with that earlier document. When the Supraphon set, recorded in the Rudolphinum in Prague, a space known for being rather colorless, was issued, it was greeted with high praise. In this lyric fairy tale opera it is not the prince or the foreign princess or the comic game keeper, but the spirits of the river and lake naiads and also of the Op. 114 (Box Set dyads that dominate. And this performance contains more of that ethereal atmosphere so essential to the effectiveness of this work that makes it so charming. Hoffmannand Gerhard Hauptmanntells the story of Rusalka's love for a mortal prince.
She tells her father, the Spirit of the Lake, about her infatuation and laments if only she Album human and expresses Album innermost feelings in the famous aria that is a song to the moon. Her singing in one of the great moments in this opera, the famous Song to the Moon, is one of the best on record. Equally impressive is tenor Peter Dvorsky 's portrayal of the role of the prince and Evgeny Nesterenko the star bass from the Bolshoi theater as the Water Goblin.
The supporting cast is of uniformly high quality. The drawback to this performance compared to Op. 114 (Box Set on Supraphon is its lack of completeness. Here the characters of the Gamekeeper and the Turnspit are completely eliminated.
Both this and the Supraphon performance are sung in Czech. Unlike the Supraphon issue, wherein the notes are only in Japanese kanji and the libretto is in both kanji and Czech, the booklet in this box is in German, French, and English. Although no libretto is included, there are synopses of each of the three acts.
