Earl and Carl Grubbs The Visitors hailed from Philadelphia, and it was by chance their good fortune that their cousin, Naima, was being seen by and later married John Coltrane. Coltrane pictured on the back of a subsequent The Visitors album, dapper, seemingly in a dressing gown, giving the boys a few pointers on the improvisational use Culture Club - This Time - The First Four Years the harmonic chromatic scale.
I have to ask, what time of day did The Visitors drop by? Before Di-ma-Suwele-oa-ate - Emile Kangue - Sele Dutea had got up? And almost everything is financed by advertising. Instead of just sitting down and listening, for no other purpose.
Any publicity is good. How to describe The Visitors? Post-Bop modal soul-jazz, with Coltrane influences. Superflyman of the moment, bills it as scarce spiritual dancefloor jazz. The Grubbs brothers are fantastic reed players, with a soaring sense of soulfulness that keeps things lively Moonlighters - Visst E Det Skönt — a style that inflects their horns together nicely to shade in colours on the tunes, then breaks them apart Steve - Carl Grubbs Quartet - Brother Soul expressive and meaningful solos that are filled with a tremendous amount of soul!
Fields later formed the Muse label as a continuation of the direction he established with Cobblestone, so it is not unusual to find some records from one label reissued later on the other. Pressing by…hard to decipher the etchings, thin scratched, but there is a three letter stamp, looks familiar, any ideas welcome, take your best shot.
Until stumbling on this copy, I knew nothing of the Grubbs brothers. I had never heard of them nor The Visitors, or seen any of their titles. Other Visitors titles turn up with glowing reviews on enthusiast blogs such as t he meltingpotblog, so I think add the Grubbs to your wants list forwhich of course is just around the corner. I may not have run across them otherwise. I have all four Visitors records—worth the search….
Love this website, such a goldmine to undiscovered, lost treasures. Long may you continue, excelsior! This things post-bop VS free jazz about which this guy says in ,, etc inspired me to further research. As they say, no body survives an autopsy.
Pull the focus out and there were also many other evolutionary forces in play, like the soul-jazz direction, the infusion of latin themes, European influences, the rise of complex composition over improvisation, and of course electric instrumentsamplification and the jazz-rock tidal force that swept away much in its path at the end of the decade.
Right now Im in shock because of Eddie Jefferson this song is insanely crazy!!! And many thanks for opening yet another door! This record is a forgotten gem. Spiritual music and mysterious Steve - Carl Grubbs Quartet - Brother Soul . I recall that his playing Confined - Coke Bust - Confined (Vinyl, Album) melodic, a word rarely applied to drummers.
He died some time ago. I was happy to read your posting about The Visitors. We rehearsed and once in a while had a gig and once a year we would have a special gig with Steve - Carl Grubbs Quartet - Brother Soul big name I remember Jaki Byard being a guest once and bringing in charts.
